While e-cigarettes or vaporizers may look daunting and intimidating to beginners, they’re quite simple to use and an effective way to quit smoking cigarettes.
If you have tried to quit smoking traditional cigarettes in the past and failed, or thinking about quitting now, but don’t know where to start, then e-cigarettes could be for you. Unfortunately, many people try vaping for the first time expecting it to be exactly the same as cigarettes, but it isn’t, and they’re disappointed.
E-Cigarettes Are Not Cigarettes
While they were initially made to resemble traditional cigarettes, and share a similar name, e-cigarettes are an entirely different entity. E-cigarettes were designed to look like traditional cigarettes, even down to the glowing red tip! You can still buy these cheap disposable cig-a-likes in gas stations and convenience stores.
E-cigarettes are a potentially safer alternative to cigarettes, but they are not the same thing.
Traditional cigarettes contain tobacco which has been treated with chemicals, with hundreds of different additives. The tobacco is ignited, and the smoke inhaled by the smoker. There are between 400 and 600 ingredients in a single cigarette. When ignited, cigarettes create more than 7,000 chemicals. Almost 70 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer.
When you use an e-cigarette, there is no combustion. No smoke. You’re not inhaling smoke; you’re inhaling the vapour. Unfortunately, the name ‘e-cigarette’ has done vaping more harm than good. This has led many people to believe that e-cigarettes are no different than traditional cigarettes.
For Best Results, Vape. Don’t Smoke!
Once you start using an e-cigarette correctly, you’ll have a much better experience. Let’s take a look at the right way to get the most out of your vaporizer!
Most ex-smokers start with a cheap disposable vaporizer. While this may seem like a good idea while you get used to vaping, it also limits the capabilities of your vaporizer and can lead to a poor first experience. There are also extremely complicated and expensive vaporizers that aren’t easy for beginners to use.
Beginners should start with a mid-range pen-style vaporizer or pod vaporizer. They’re easy to use and should provide you with an excellent first impression of vaping. Somewhere in the $30-75 range will get you an effective first-time vaporizer.
The next mistake many beginners make is trying to quit smoking to fast. They purchase e-liquid with little or no nicotine expecting to stop smoking within hours. What you should do is start with a high nicotine level, and then once you’re getting used to vaping, start transitioning down to lower levels of nicotine over a few weeks or months.
Start with an e-liquid that has a concentration of around 20mg/ml of nicotine. Then, reduce it to 18mg/ml after a few weeks. Then, to 16mg/ml. Keep going until you reduce the nicotine levels to such a concentration that you don’t get any nicotine cravings if you quit vaping. If you find your craving aren’t being satisfied, you can always go back up a little and try again.
Finally, let’s come to the act of vaping itself. You don’t drag on a vaporizer repeatedly as you do with a traditional cigarette. Try taking a small inhale on the vape to start with. This will draw the liquid into the coil and prevent you from getting a dry hit. Now, take long, gentle puffs.
You’ll find that you use your vaporizer more frequently than you would a cigarette, but also not take as many puffs as you would when you smoke a whole cigarette in one go. Once you nail it, you will love the experience.
