The 101 of battery safety and e-cigarettes explained!
It’s hard not to read anything or watch anything about e-cigarettes on mainstream television without seeing horror stories of batteries ‘exploding’ on e-cigarettes and vaporizers. The truth is somewhat less exciting than the news stories on television would have you believe.
Much of the e-cigarette is un-regulated. What does that mean? It means that there isn’t a lot of government regulation surrounding how devices are manufactured. There are also a lot of vaporizer mods such as mechanical mods, which gives users a high-level of customization when it comes to their devices.
Misuse or incorrect use of e-cigarettes and vaporizers is one of the leading causes of batteries failing. The same could be said of any electronic device which has a powerful battery. It’s important to follow the manufactures directions whenever you’re using or charging your e-cigarette.
Important Battery Safety for Vapers
Below we’ll cover some of the important battery safety tips that all vapers should be aware of, regardless of whether you’re an experienced or beginner vaper.
- Use the Correct Battery – If your vaporizer or e-cigarette has removable batteries and you need to replace them, it’s important to use batteries supplied by the manufacturer. If you supply your batteries, then take the time to read the manufacturer’s recommendations before choosing a battery. You need to consider specifications such as the milliamp-hours (mAh), whether you need ICR or IMR batteries, 18650 or 20700 batteries and anything else specified.
- Choose Reputable Brands – That old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is especially true about cheap electronic products such as batteries. It’s always the best idea to stick to high-quality brands that stand behind their products. Big brand names have a history of providing high-quality batteries and have strict quality control procedures in place to ensure they are putting out premium products.
- Follow the Correct Safe Battery Practices – There are a variety of simple, yet effective safe battery practices that everyone should follow. The first one is never using a battery with a damaged wrapper, connection, or casing. Never overtighten battery connections, such as your atomizer connection. Don’t expose your battery to extreme hot or cold temperatures. Never leave your batteries or e-cigarette in a hot car exposed to sunlight. Never leave your batteries unattended on battery chargers or plugged into USB chargers overnight.
- Battery Charger Safety – Don’t cheap out when it comes to purchasing a battery charger for your e-cigarette. It’s always best to remove your batteries from the e-cigarette (if possible) and charge them on an external charger rather than via the USB. It’s important that you a battery charger that suits your battery and not mix brands and batteries as they are all different and suit different batteries.
E-cigarette and vaporizer battery safety is extremely important, and we cannot stress it enough. You need to know and understand both your e-cigarette and your batteries before you start vaping. If you’re using any mechanical mods or vaporizers where you can customize them yourself, you must have a good understanding of electronics and electrical safety.
